Nebraska Football: Myles Farmer will add size, speed to secondary
Nebraska football is losing a number of players in the secondary to graduation after the season and that’s why adding more depth is a good thing.
The secondary and the pass defense haven’t always been great for Nebraska football in 2018, yet that doesn’t change the fact that the Huskers will lose some experience heading into next season.
Across the board at defensive back, Nebraska football is going to have turnover next season. Guys like Antonio Reed, Lamar Jackson and Tre Neal will all be graduating and despite struggling at times, all those guys have made impact plays in recent weeks.
Jackson made an interception against Ohio State. Reed forced a fumble and picked off a pass against Michigan State and also versus the Spartans, Neal made a number of key stops. Yet, all three will need to be replaced next season and one guy that will vie to do just that is the newest Nebraska football commit Myles Farmer.
Farmer announced his decision Sunday. The three-star safety from Atlanta, Georgia also seems to fit exactly what the Huskers want at the safety position. At 6-foot-3, 194 pounds, Turner is big, but he’s also explosive. He has the size and speed element that Nebraska wants, similar to another recent commit Javin Wright.
Farmer, who is the 65th-best safety in the country according to 247 sports and the No. 81 player in the state of Georgia, is the second safety added by Nebraska so far this recruiting cycle and the third defensive back. The Huskers now have 21 commitments. Their class also ranks 21st overall in the FBS and fourth in the Big Ten.
The addition of Farmer is just another good sign for Nebraska football, which had built a lot of momentum in recent months. Farmer visited the campus this past weekend and the atmosphere at Memorial Stadium certainly seemed to play a role in his decision.
If he wants to make an immediate impact, he will have plenty of competition on his hands, however, he’s an athlete with size and toughness, all things Nebraska wants in its defensive backs, so at some point, sooner or later, Farmer should see the field. At the very least, he will get the chance to earn himself some playing time, possibly as early as next year.
