Nebraska volleyball has just two regular season matches remaining before tournament play begins and the Huskers are heating up! The timing couldn’t be better either.
It’s hard to believe, but the regular season is winding down for college volleyball and that means it’s almost time for the tournament to begin! For Nebraska volleyball fans, that means the real games are arriving and this is a time where fans can puff their chests out a bit and expect some big-time wins.
For a little bit, it appeared as though maybe this wasn’t going to be a typical season for the Huskers. They’ve lost six matches this season, the most they’ve racked up since 2014 when they had ten losses on the year.
All six losses came against ranked opponents and five of those six losses came in the month of October. That month was not kind to Nebraska, as they went a lowly 3-5 during October. The good news, however, was that as soon as the calendar turned to November, a switch was flipped with this unit and they turned back into the dominant program we’ve been used to watching over the years.
After a riveting five-set win over rival Penn State to set the pace for November, Nebraska has continued to win, recently notching their sixth straight win. The Cornhuskers now sit at 22-6 on the year and have two more games to impress before tournament play begins.
With the volleyball tournament, the top four seeds get to host up until the semifinals. With Nebraska having six losses and sitting third in their conference, it’s not likely that they’ll get a top seed. Nebraska didn’t even get a top-four seed last year and that was after having just four losses, one Big Ten loss, and a conference title.
The best possible news for this program and the fans is how well the team has been playing recently. It was looking bleak in October, but the Huskers have rebounded nicely in the month of November. If there’s a time to get hot, it’s right around this time and that’s kind of what we saw with last year’s team as well.
When Nebraska volleyball gets hot, they’re arguably the most dangerous team in the sport and we saw evidence of that last year. Before we can officially look ahead to the tournament, however, there are still two more regular season matches remaining, both set to take place at the Bob Devaney Sports Center next weekend.
Nebraska hosts Ohio State the night after Thanksgiving and will hold its Senior Night the following night while welcoming in Maryland. While next weekend is the last regular season home stand for Nebraska, they’ll likely still host games in the first two rounds of the tournament, just not the Regionals.
This season has flown by, but Nebraska volleyball still has to focus on the task at hand and that’s taking care of business against the Terrapins and Buckeyes next weekend. After that, we can officially get pumped for the postseason! Go Big Red!
