Nebraska football won a hard-fought victory over Michigan State Saturday at Memorial Stadium and here are five things it taught us about the Huskers.
There were a lot of reasons why it was important for Nebraska football to beat Michigan State. But maybe the most important was to send the seniors out the right way at Memorial Stadium and thanks to a heroic effort from the Blackshirts, NU prevailed 9-6.
It wasn’t pretty but anytime you beat a team like Michigan State, a team that was ranked in the top 20 just a week ago, one that also has proved to be among the Big Ten’s best over the last decade, you will take the win whatever way it comes.
But make no mistake, it was huge for Scott Frost. It’s not necessarily the kind of win that will change the fortunes of the program, yet for a guy that has really created a special bond with this senior class, you could tell he wanted it badly. So did his team and it played like it.
When the times got tough, Nebraska stood tall, especially on defense. Down 3-0, Nebraska couldn’t afford to give up a touchdown and when Michigan State got in position, it didn’t. It held and didn’t allow the Spartans to score again.
It took toughness to win this game and that’s something that hasn’t really been associated with Nebraska the past few years. That is changing and that’s one thing we learned here are five others from the 9-6 win over Michigan State.
