Nebraska Football: Updating key injuries for Michigan State
Nebraska football is set to host Michigan State Saturday and after practice Wednesday, we got updates on injuries to JD Spielman and Maurice Washington.
It’s hard to say that any football team is really healthy in the month of November, but when it comes to the Nebraska football team, it’s kind of true.
Yet, that doesn’t mean Nebraska football isn’t dealing with any injuries. In fact, the Huskers are dealing with two that could have a big impact on Saturday’s home game against Michigan State.
The Spartans will come into Memorial Stadium sporting a 6-4 record and a badly injured team. The Huskers, on the other hand, have put most of their injury issues behind them, outside of a couple things going on with Maurice Washington and JD Spielman.
According to 247sports, Nebraska offensive coordinator Troy Walters said that Spielman has been sore and day-to-day. Yet, he did throw out the caveat that because Spielman knows the system so well, he wouldn’t have to practice much in order to play.
While the Huskers are probably going to have to wait and see how Spielman does the rest of the week, it sounds like Nebraska will have the services of Washington, the backup running back to Devine Ozigbo.
Washington didn’t see a ton of carries last week against Illinois, actually only three. But they netted 67 yards, which is why it will be nice to have him on the field against the Spartans. Beyond that, defensive lineman Deontre Thomas is another that is looking questionable.
Michigan State is much worse off. The Spartans will be without LJ Scott their top running back and also Felton Davis. Both players were lost to season-ending injuries. Michigan State also isn’t sure on its quarterback Saturday, although that has more to do with performance than injury, even though Brian Lewerke hasn’t seemed quite right.
Injuries matter at any level of football and even though Nebraska has had to deal with the injury bug a fair amount of times this season, if Spielman can go Saturday, it will be hard to complain.
