Nebraska Football: Huskers Offense has bright future under Scott Frost
Scott Frost came to Nebraska football to change the culture and on the offensive side of the ball, he has already succeeded.
There is no doubt that Nebraska football fans wanted the 2018 season to go a little differently. At the same time, you can bet Scott Frost was hoping for something different too.
Yet, it does no good to dwell on what could have been. Yes, this Nebraska football season would have been better with wins over Colorado and Troy, even Northwestern and yes, it would be great to see the Huskers battling for a bowl berth in the final few games, but again, the past in the past and because of Frost, the future is now looking very bright.
At his press conference yesterday, Frost mentioned something rather striking. He said a freshman told him that a senior approached the player and explained how he was jealous, jealous he wouldn’t be around a few more years, jealous of the freshman that seemingly is getting in on the start of something special.
Make no mistake, within a few years, Nebraska football won’t be suffering through losing seasons and hoping just for bowl eligibility. Frost has Nebraska headed in the right direction and the offense is the best sign of that right now.
Having a great head coach matters in college football, but so does having a good quarterback and right now, it looks like Nebraska is solid to be solid in that department for years to come. First, you have Adrian Martinez, who has led the Huskers to five straight games with at least 450 yards, something that hasn’t been done since 1995. In fact, it’s only been done four other times in Huskers history: 1972, 1982 and 1994. So you can see the company the Huskers are keeping.
The best part about it is that Martinez is just a freshman. He will have at least two more years in Lincoln and most likely three — he doesn’t seem like an NFL prospect early on to me. But that doesn’t mean he can’t win big in college. With his arm, his legs and with Frost’s exciting offense, the sky is the limit.
The Huskers will lose Stanley Morgan Jr.and Devine Ozigbo, two key parts of this offensive surge, however with Maurice Washington and JD Spielman back in the fold, next year’s offense already feels exciting. And with Luke McCaffrey coming to Nebraska football next season, quarterback depth shouldn’t be an issue.
One injury to Martinez probably cost Nebraska two games this season. It’s unfortunate but true and there was little Frost could do about that. Now, the Huskers are 2-7, yet they are playing with the fire of a team that is 7-2.
It wouldn’t be surprising to see them catch fire and win out, but more than that, don’t be surprised if Nebraska football is a contender in the Big Ten West as early as next season. After all, with Frost and Martinez, the future is bright.
