Nebraska Football: Can the Huskers realistically run the table?
After a promising performance against Ohio State, it’s worth asking what Nebraska football can achieve the rest of the season.
One of the worst parts about Nebraska football‘s loss to Ohio State was the fact that it made reaching a bowl game impossible. Even with a win, it might have been a long shot, but hey, a chance is a chance.
Now, at 2-7, the Huskers don’t have any chance of making a bowl game. It’s disappointing, but it doesn’t mean Nebraska football can’t finish with a flurry.
In fact, I can’t think of a much better way for the Huskers to finish than winning out in their final three games against Illinois, Michigan State and Iowa. With just two wins in the first seven games, winning three in a row might seem far-fetched, however, with two games at home, it’s not as radical as you might think.
The first test will come next week against 4-5 Illinois. The Fighting Illini will be working to reach bowl eligibility, so it will be a big game for them too. It’s also a game that the Huskers should have a good chance to win. If Adrian Martinez can keep playing the way he has in recent weeks, Nebraska should have a good shot at beating Illinois.
Michigan State will be a much bigger challenge. Yet, the Spartans are far from a juggernaut. Michigan State is a strong defensive team, but one that might not be good enough to come in Lincoln and win going away. The Huskers will have to play their best, but it’s another winnable home game.
Finally, the rivalry game against Iowa will provide plenty of motivation for Scott Frost and Nebraska. By then, beating Iowa will be the last thing the Huskers can do to make the season a success, so expect their best effort at Kinnick Stadium the day after Thanksgiving.
Obviously, this season hasn’t gone the way any Nebraska football fan wanted. However, three straight wins and a victory over Iowa would be a sweet way to end the season and after the way Nebraska played against Ohio State, that scenario seems much more realistic.
