Nebraska Football: Huskers miss out on RB Wandale Robinson
Recruiting can be unpredictable and after looking like a strong contender for months, Nebraska football missed out on top target Wandale Robinson.
Despite a slow start to the Scott Frost era in terms of wins, Nebraska football has been doing some solid work on the recruiting trail, especially in recent weeks. On Wednesday, Husker fans were hoping that would continue with the commitment of Wandale Robinson, a four-star running back out of the state of Kentucky.
For a long time, Nebraska football was viewed as the favorite to land Robinson, however, in recent weeks, Kentucky made a strong push and with the Wildcats in the midst of quite possibly their best season ever, Robinson announced that he had decided to stick with his in-state school.
Thus, the Huskers lost out on the running back, who will now play for the Wildcats starting next season.
If you don’t know much about Robinson, it’s safe to say that he’s a dynamic talent, even at just 5-foot-8. His speed and electrifying ability seemed like a perfect fit for Frost’s high-flying offense. In terms of all-purpose backs, he ranks fourth in the country and his loss certainly hurts a class that is a little short on offensive playmakers.
Nebraska football does have two, three-star running backs committed for 2019 in Rahmir Johnson and Dedrick Mills. Mills is the 18th-ranked JUCO running back, while Johnson, who is out of New Jersey, is ranked 416th nationally. Of course, Maurice Washington has a bright future, but depth is never a bad thing and no team can ever have enough explosive players.
Ultimately, the loss won’t hurt Nebraska that badly. It’s not unusual for a player to choose to play for his in-state team. Normally, you wouldn’t be happy about losing a recruiting battle to Kentucky, yet with the way the Wildcats are rolling right now, it has given them momentum on the recruiting trail, which paid off in a big way Wednesday.
It’s a disappointment sure, however, Nebraska still has the No. 22 class in the country and the fourth-best class in the Big Ten. Now, the focus for the Huskers should be to finish strong on the field, which could help lead to a strong finish on the recruiting trail in the coming months.
