Nebraska Football: Javin Wright is a solid get for Huskers secondary
Nebraska football got some good recruiting news Wednesday, as Huskers legacy Javin Wright committed to Scott Frost and NU.
Say what you want about the performance of the Nebraska football team on the field this season, head coach Scott Frost is making some headway on the recruiting trail and that continued Wednesday with the commitment of Javin Wright.
If you don’t know Wright, you should get to know the 6-foot-3 corner, who also happens to be the son of former Nebraska football player Toby Wright, who played on the 1993 team that was a field goal away from a national championship.
Yet, don’t think Wright is coming to the Huskers because of his dad. In fact, he wasn’t pursued by the old staff and when the new coaches offered him, they didn’t even know he was a legacy at the time.
Wright is a 3-star recruit and the 14th-ranked player in the state of Arizona. At Nebraska, he should get a chance to play right away at corner, however, if he continues to bulk up, his final position could be safety.
Wright is one of the lower-ranked recruits in Nebraska’s class, yet he also offers upside, particularly because of his size and athleticism. He chose the Huskers over UCLA and some other schools in the Pac-12.
With the addition of Wright, Nebraska football now has 20 verbal commitments for the 2019 recruiting class. It’s a solid group that currently ranks 22nd nationally and fourth in the Big Ten. It’s a class that is filled with athletes, however, Wright is the first true cornerback listed.
There certainly will be more work to do for the Nebraska coaching staff but getting a guy like Wright is good for a few reasons. One he adds depth to the secondary and the chance to play at multiple positions, but two, he knows what it means to be a Blackshirt. His dad was a Blackshirt and you can bet he will want to earn that distinction too.
Those are the kinds of players that will help restore Nebraska football, not to the levels it reached in the mid-1990’s under Tom Osborne, but certainly to a level of respectability that has been missing in recent years.
Rebuilding an empire is a long process but Frost is doing it the right way and guys like Javin Wright are going to help in that endeavor.
