The Nebraska football team continues it attempts at turning around a struggling defense as quickly as possible as JUCO recruiting isn’t over yet.

Never let it be said Nebraska’s coaching staff is resting on its collective laurels. It’s clear Scott Frost and company know there is still plenty of work to do.

As the season has rolled on, the staff has gently transitioned from talking about going to the Big Ten Title game, to a bowl game, to focusing on recruiting. It’s been a heck of a sales job all along the way.

Those who aren’t paying a ton of attention might not even realize talk of a postseason has all but gone away. The full focus of the staff is now on preparing for the future. The good news is that the Huskers’ coaching staff is looking for the future to be close.

That was evidenced by an offer to JUCO linebacker Dru Mathis on Wednesday morning. Mathis plays for Moorpark College this season but will be looking to move up in 2019. Mathis is a bit of a diamond in the rough, especially since his Junior College team isn’t particularly good.

Normally when you see a highly touted JUCO recruit, his school is among the best in their division. Dedric Mills is one example of this. The JUCO running back is having one hell of a season, and his team is coming along for the ride.

Mill’s team is currently 6-0. Mathis’ squad is currently 1-5. They lost their most recent game 36-3.

When you’re talking about a team that bad, you aren’t going to see a player like inside linebacker putting up huge numbers. Dru Mathis is still doing his best to stand out from the crowd.

The Ventura, California native leads the Moorpark defense in tackles with 62 already this season. He’s also got 12 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. If those stats weren’t eye-popping enough, he’s also got a pass breakup and a blocked kick. In other words, he’s all over the field.

The Nebraska football team clearly likes what he sees. At the moment Dru Mathis only has four total offers, with Illinois, TCU and UNLV being the other schools recruiting him the hardest. It would appear for now, the Cornhuskers have got to be the frontrunner for the prospect’s services.
