Should Nebraska football fans be nervous that Iowa State beat the Huskers to the punch when it comes to offering the Omaha Westside player?
While the Nebraska football program has been ramping up its recruiting efforts in the last few weeks, they were beaten to the punch on one player. Omaha Westside’s Avante Dickerson received an offer from Iowa State on Wednesday afternoon.
That offer was the first FBS offer for Dickerson, as well as the first Power 5 for the cornerback. It seems unlikely it will be the last of either for the young prospect.
The Huskers can be forgiven for allowing the Cyclones to get a jump on Dickerson. He won’t be able to sign on the dotted line of a Letter of Intent until the winter of 2021.
That’s one of the reasons Dickerson isn’t carrying many grades on him when it comes to how he rates compared to other cornerbacks in his class, or how he stands up for in-state prospects.
What we do know is that Dickerson appears to have the goods. Film on him shows a defensive back who is hard to shake for opposing receivers. When he does lose coverage he’s able to make it up rather quickly.
For those who have been following the 2018 storyline, he brings something even more valuable. Quite a bit of his film centers on his performance on special teams. He’s an excellent kick returner who can also beat his opponent off the line on kick block.
The only real question now is whether or not the Huskers can find a way to get him to graduate from Westside sooner. Obviously, they will also need to get him an offer. Now that he is officially on the radar of FBS powers, especially former bitter rivals, it likely won’t be long before Dickerson has himself a Nebraska football offer.
