Special teams for the Nebraska football team is still broken

We’re in week five of the season and the Huskers special teams is still a giant mess. That unit almost allowed a third kick return for a touchdown of the year, and was only stopped at the last minute by punter Caleb Lightbourn.

Maybe I should say “backup punter” Caleb LIghtbourn. While he made a saving tackle at one of the game, he also had a truly horrible night punting the ball.

Lightbourn has had a rather up and down career and it appears Jovan Dewitt and Scott Frost have seen enough for now. Isaac Armstrong replaced Lightbourn late in the game and uncorked a couple of booming punts.

That wasn’t the only problem with the special teams unit though. They committed another three penalties and, for the fifth straight game did very little with their own returns.

The most disconcerting thing about the continued struggles is that this appears to be about the worst special teams unit we’ve seen in decades.
