Nebraska football: Akron ADs comments are absurd finale to ridiculous soap opera
Akron’s athletic director claims Nebraska scheduled Bethune Cookman because the Huskers are afraid of the Zips. Let this soap opera end now.
I thought I had seen the most ridiculous responses to Nebraska scheduling their 12th game against Bethune Cookman when I read Husker fans’ reactions to the announcement. Then Akron’s Athletic Director opened his mouth.
As all Cornhusker fans know by now, Nebraska was scheduled to take on Akron in the season opener for both squads. The game was canceled after originally being postponed due to lightning.
While there was originally talk the two teams might come together later in the season, it became obvious fairly early on that wasn’t going to work. For one thing, Nebraska made it clear it wanted to play the makeup game in October. Akron doesn’t have a similar bye week that month.

Larry Williams apparently doesn’t think that’s the real reason his Zips aren’t going to be playing the Huskers this season. The Akron AD told the Cleveland Plans Dealer that the Huskers “didn’t want to compete at our level.”
Methinks someone has let beating Northwestern go to their head. Akron was almost a four-touchdown underdog to a team that was going to be starting a true freshman quarterback for the first time ever. Let’s not pretend scheduling Bethune Cookman was Nebraska running scared from Akron.
The Cornhuskers scheduled Bethune Cookman because they were able to play when Nebraska wanted and they were a sure win. To be clear, Akron was being counted as a victory as well.
Three defensive touchdowns against a Northwestern team that is struggling mightily doesn’t mean Akron has suddenly become a powerhouse. It’s important to note that when you also consider Moos and company now going to attempt to cancel out the $1 million payout altogether.
Let’s also remember Akron was asked … nay begged by the Cornhuskers and Fox Sports to stay in Lincoln and play the game on Sunday morning. The Nebraska football team even offered vacant dorm rooms for the players to stay. The Zips couldn’t get out of town fast enough.
Don’t let Willaims comments mislead you into thinking Akron really wanted to play this game and Bill Moos and company were the problem. That anger you’re seeing in Ohio is over the lost dollars. Now let’s have it be the last we have to hear from them.
