Nebraska football finds its cupcake opponent for 12th game
The Nebraska football team announced it has officially inked its opponent for a 12th game, which will take place on October 27.
The will they, or won’t they period of the season is officially over. At least it is when it comes to whether or not the Nebraska football team will be able to find an opponent for a 12th game.
The program announced on Thursday afternoon that it has officially signed FCS team Bethune Cookman to come to Lincoln during the Cornhuskers’ former bye week on October 27.
The announcement basically means the team is going to be playing 12 straight games. That might be fun for the fans but affords the Huskers even less margin for error and injury as the year plays out. That’s the bad news.
The good news is, Bethune Cookman appears to be even more of an automatic win than Akron was supposed to be. Of course, the Zips are currently 2-0 and just finished an upset win over Northwestern so it’s possible the Huskers dodged a bullet there rather than missed out on a season-opening win.
Bethune Cookman, even by FCS standards, is not a good team this year. The Wildcats opened the season with a loss to Tennessee State, 34-3 before upending a Virginia University of Lynchburg, a team not even associated with the NCAA. Lynchburg, it turns out is part of the NCCAA. You’re not seeing double, they play in the National Christian College Athletic Association.
After that win, Bethune Cookman lost to Florida Atlantic 49-28. Before you point out they seemed to play the Owls fairly tight, it should be pointed out FAU led 29-0 after the first quarter. It appears Lane Kiffin called off the dogs after that.
For their expected butt-whooping, the Wildcats are going to receive $800,000. Athletic Director Bill Moos says the Nebraska football team focused on the FCS school right from the beginning but had to work out logistics, such as getting its new opponent a waiver in order to play an extra regular season game.
