Former Nebraska football stars voice support for Scott Frost

The Scott Frost era of the Nebraska football program is not off to a great start but that doesn’t mean former Huskers are bailing.

When Scott Frost returned to the Nebraska football program, several former Huskers voiced their extreme excitement. Over the long winter, spring and summer there were plenty of people who thought Frost was going to be turning the program around right away.

Frustration definitely mounted among Husker faithful on Saturday afternoon. After watching the team lose at home to Troy an edge of frustration surfaced on social media.

Former Husker Fabian Washington was among the first to try and tamp that down.

At first the former Husker and NFL star had a simple message. “In Frost I Trust.”

Once Nebraska fans started to engage with him, he made it clear that he knows it’s going to take a while to get the program back to where it needs to be. At the same time, he fully believes Scott Frost is still the one to get them there.

When he was flat out asked how long it would take to get the Cornhuskers back to elite status, he was blunt. “Elite,” three to four (years) with great recruiting classes. And I’m being generous. New systems are very hard.”

In order to demonstrate that doesn’t mean he doesn’t think the program is going in the right direction he added, “I think we’ll be good next year.”

While he was engaging with other fans, he laid out why he thinks it’s going to take longer to get the team back to where it belongs. Washington said, in his view the program hasn’t been “elite” since 2001.

Because of that, it’s going to take longer than a few games to get things sorted. Another former Husker, Jason Peter was quite vocal in his support on Sunday morning.

“Disappointed? Of course! changed my belief in Coach Frost &his staff? Nope! Changed my belief in these players? Nope!..It’s like the addict been using for 20 yrs but he’s baffled he’s not better in 28 days! Bad habits are still being broken. Learning how 2 live the new way.”

It’s clear there are some Nebraska football fans (including myself) who are a bit nervous about the product that has been on the field so far. Some former Cornhusker greats are telling all who will listen patience is what’s needed and it will eventually be rewarded. Those are words we can all take to heart.
