B-. . . . WIDE RECEIVERS/TIGHT ENDS

This unit might be the toughest to grade of any on the Nebraska football team. That’s largely because they had a quarterback who didn’t really allow them to utilize their talents.

What we can say is that there weren’t any big drops and that’s a massive improvement from week on. This grade is also influenced by the play and the words of senior Stanley Morgan.

After his touchdown catch that put the Huskers on the board, he wasn’t about to celebrate. The TD made the score 17-7 and Morgan was all business. He finished the game with five catches for 64 yards.

After the loss, reports are he gave his teammates a talk and made it clear what they were doing was not good enough. The team captain is, at this point, trying to will his teammates to greatness.

On the other side of the field, JD Spielman chipped in six catches for 45 yards and a touchdown. Both Spielman and Morgan had drops against Colorado that would have been game changers. It was good to see them step up against Troy.

Why is this grade not better? Why tight end Jack Stoll had a very tough catch early in the first half that might have been a momentum grabber. Unfortunately, he fumbled after catching it.

That fumble certainly gave Troy some momentum. The lack of production from any other receivers on this team is becoming a bit concerning. Mike Williams‘ only contribution was a costly holding penalty.

Again, some of that can be blamed on Bunch, but like the running backs, there weren’t enough receivers putting the team on their back and carrying them to victory.
