. . QUARTERBACKS . B-.

There are bound to be some Nebraska football fans who think I’m grading a bit too harshly considering the overall experience of the guys who started for the Huskers on Saturday.

There’s very little doubt that Adrian Martinez especially showed the kind of promise that won him the starting quarterback job for the Cornhuskers. Martinez completed 15 of 20 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown.

He also ran the ball for the 117 yards and another two touchdowns on just 15 carries. If you had to sum up what Martinez was on Saturday in one word it would absolutely be “electric.”

The problem was that Martinez looked like a freshman who hadn’t taken a snap in over a year at times. That was especially true when talking about the beginning of the game.

In the Huskers’ first possession, Martinez put the ball on the turf but his team was able to recover the fumble. On the second possession, he fumbled again and this time Colorado came up with it.

That fumble allowed CU to take a 14-0 lead. Martinez had another turnover, this time an interception in the fourth quarter that was ill-advised at best. After Martinez had to leave the game with an apparent knee injury, Andrew Bunch came into the game in relief.

While Bunch didn’t play particularly poorly, the walkon for the Nebraska football team went just 4 of 9 passing for 49 yards. Those incompletions included a couple of key passes on what could have been the game-winning drive.
