The Nebraska football team not getting to play a season opener against Akron could change the way the season plays out for the worse.

The Scott Frost era at Nebraska football kicked off on Saturday. That was about all that happened before the game was called on account of lightning.

Now Husker fans will have to wait until the team’s game against Colorado to see just what the Cornhuskers have on tap for 2018. That’s a bad thing.

Canceling the game is about more than having to wait an extra week for the season opener. The Huskers are introducing a brand new offense with a freshman quarterback.

Nebraska will now open the season against the Colorado Buffaloes. While that team was 5-7 a year ago, they were quite impressive in their season opener against Colorado State.

There’s an old saying that a college football team does its most improvement between the first and second game of the season. Colorado gets to benefit from having an idea of what they are going to do this season while also improving.

The Huskers don’t get that benefit. They are going to be trying to feel their way through the first game of the season in a game that is now going to have the added hype of going up against an old rival.

There is also the fact that the Huskers season has always been one that could include just five or six wins. Akron was counted by almost everyone as one of those wins, barring something catastrophic.

Most people were talking about a massive upset loss, but the lightning-out counts as catastrophy as well. Imagine if things go wrong the rest of the way and the Huskers are stuck at 5-6 at the end of the regular season.

We all hope there isn’t any concern about getting bowl eligible. When you look at the rest of the schedule, especially a Colorado game that just got a bit more difficult.

It’s possible the cancellation was unavoidable for the Nebraska football team. Its possible that a reschedule just isn’t possible. Even if no one is to blame, the game being called off is bad news moving forward for the Cornhuskers.
