The Nebraska football team and Ronald Thompkins suffered a blow on Saturday when he tore his ACL. The Huskers have said they will honor their offer anyway.

There have been two pretty big “downer” stories around the Nebraska football team the last few weeks. The first of course is the departure of quarterback Tristan Gebbia.

The other is the ballad of class of 2019 commit Ronald Thompkins. A running back out of Georgia, he’s playing on a team that was featured on ESPN last week.

Unfortunately, that means that the prospect had the entire country tear his ACL in the first half of the game. Before that injury, he had managed to average about 10 yards per carry.

That was helped by the 21-yard dash that ended his season. The news of the season-ending injury was even harder to take considering the back had hurt his other ACL the season prior.

It’s a safe bet that Thompkins was crestfallen when he found out he was done for the year. The news that the Nebraska football team is going to stand by him and honor their scholarship offer had to be a breath of fresh air.

When you are a high school athlete the caliber of Thompkins and you have a season-ending injury, there’s always a question as to whether or not your football career is over as well.

The Huskers saying they are going to allow him to be on the team no matter what means he can rest easy. The commit knows that he can now just focus on getting better and getting back on the field in due time.

Ronald Thompkins doesn’t have to go out of his way to impress the coaches at the Nebraska football or any other school by coming back too early. That approach also pays dividends in future years, when other commits notice how Scott Frost and company handled this situation.
