Barrett Pickering wins the job as a true freshman

Much has been made of Adrian Martinez winning the quarterback job as a true freshman. While Barrett Pickering winning the job as the kicker is less flashy, it’s still a plenty important development.

We didn’t hear a whole lot about the special teams units in fall camp. It’s going to be at least another few days before we know if that’s a good or a bad thing.

What we know now is that true freshman Barrett Pickering one the job over redshirt freshman Cole Frahm. This isn’t the kind of position battle that is ever going to draw a ton of attention.

God willing, it’s not a position that is going to affect the game against Akron. What we do know is that sooner or later this season, a kick is either going to be missed or made that changes the face of a game.

The fact that the kicker position is one with zero experience is interesting. It’s more interesting when you look at the kickers who have come through the Nebraska football program over the years.
