Nebraska football: Tre Bryant becomes latest surprise departure
Nebraska football running back Tre Bryant is retiring from football. Despite talk of being all the way back, his knee is reportedly not holding up.
Friday was a day most Nebraska football fans were looking forward to because they expected to hear who was going to be the starting quarterback. Instead, Husker fans got startling news that can only be described as heartbreaking. Tre Bryant has announced he’s walking away from football.
The announcement seems to come out of nowhere, at least to people not inside the team. When fall camp kicked off, the news was his knee was doing well and he expected to compete for a starting job.
At the same time, former head coach Mike Riley warned us last year that the problems that sidelined Bryant last year were likely something he was going to have to deal with for the rest of his football career.

It appears Bryant has decided the pain was just too much. According to Huskers’ head coach Scott Frost, the knee has been causing Bryant so much pain he’s not able to sleep at night.
The news ends what looked like a promising career as a Husker. When Bryant was healthy, he was easily the best running back on the roster a year ago.
The news also bookends what has been a weird week of departure announcements. Bryant becomes the fourth Cornhusker from the active roster to announce he was leaving the team.
The running back is the second who has had to leave for medical reasons. Linebacker Avery Roberts and cornerback Will Jackson left because they were buried on the depth chart.
Offensive lineman Jalin Barnett announced his retirement from football earlier this week due to repeated concussions. The Nebraska football team is just eight days away from the first game of the season and the loss of Tre Bryant is easily the most devastating of the Scott Frost era.
