Nebraska football running back Maurice Washington has had a long and winding road waiting to finally, officially become a Cornhusker.
There are two players the Nebraska football team is waiting for to join them. Andre Watt, a wide receiver who could change up the team’s plan this fall and running back Maurice Washington.
Watt has said in the past few days he thinks he’s going to do everything he needs to do in order to get to Lincoln and be ready to play this fall. On Friday, Washington tweeted out a hint that he to, is just about ready to join his team.
The catch here, is that even if Washington is able to join the Cornhuskers, he won’t be playing this season. The running back’s academic struggles have left him ineligible, though the school still wants to add him to the roster.
By doing this, Washington isn’t going the JUCO route and the Huskers aren’t having to recruit him all over again. That’s how talented the running back is.
Scott Frost and company don’t want to run even a little bit of a risk of having another school come in and scoop him up. As was reported back in May even if he does finish up his graduation requirements this summer (and it appears he’s about to do that) he doesn’t have the right grades or credits.
"“He is back in school, in California,” a Nebraska football spokesperson said. “We have him working on a plan that gets him to graduation. Even if he graduates this summer, he is not going to graduate with enough core hours. The plan that we have him on currently is one that puts us in a position to make an application for a waiver for an academic redshirt.”"
The good news in all of this is that Washington is fully aware of this. This isn’t a man who thinks he’s going to get to play if he really hustles. He’s still hustling to get done what he can get done.
It feels like this new Cornhuskers staff are uniquely suited to make sure that Maurice Washington does what he needs to do once he gets here. The goal, that still looks achievable, is that he play for the Nebraska football team in the future.
