Former Nebraska football player Dejon Gomes had some choice words about Netflix original series, Last Chance U. He has some experience in this area.

Don’t count former Nebraska football star Dejon Gomes among the fans of Last Chance U. Gomes took to Twitter earlier this week to voice his displeasure with the Netflix original series.

Season 3 of Last Chance U recently debuted and the social media-verse has been alight with various impressions of the show and most often, it’s coach. The series spent the first two years focusing on East Mississippi Community College (where current Husker wide receiver Mike Williams played)  but has moved onto Independence Community College in Kansas for the current season.

At ICC, head coach Jason Brown has gotten a lot of love, and a lot of hate for the way he carries himself and treats his team. Gomes takes issue with the way players are treated in particular.

It should be pointed out that he doesn’t seem to have an issue specifically with Brown, or ICC but rather with the overall portrayal of Junior College football. On Monday Gomes wrote:

"“Being a former Juco National Champion, I refuse to watch “last chance u” b/c I didnt like the description of how they portray JUCO ball. After watching a 2min clip I realized Im glad I dont. Out in Cali juco is a business not gridiron gang. It’s college football & conducted as so.”"

Another former Husker, Josh Mitchell was the first to respond to the comments, saying the new season was “the most dysfunctional … I’ve ever witnessed.” Others jumped into the thread to give their own take on whether the Last Chance U portrayal was accurate or not.

Gomes certainly comes from a place where he understands what is reality and what isn’t in Junior College football. Before joining the Nebraska football team, he played for the City College of San Francisco.

Gomes took over as a starter in the defensive backfield for the Cornhuskers in 2009. That season he amassed 46 tackles, three for loss and four interceptions.

In 2010 he put up the kind of numbers that had the NFL come calling. That season he registered 99 tackles, a sack and three interceptions. He was subsequently drafted in the fifth round of the 2011 draft by the Washington Redskins.

Gomes played three seasons in the NFL (two with Washington and a final year with Detroit) and had eight starts in 46 total games played.

The former Husker also knows a thing or two about molding young men as a coach. After his playing days, Gomes became a graduate assistant at Central Michigan.

In March of this year, he got his first professional coaching gig. Gomes was named the defensive backs coach for the Bowling Green Eagles. He’s been reunited with his former coach, Carl Pelini in that role.

Pelini was the defensive coordinator for the Nebraska football team when Dejon Gomes played in Lincoln. After a couple of rocky years, Carl Pelini was hired as the defensive coordinator for Bowling Green in December.
