Nebraska football: Scott Frost has self imposed deadline for choosing a quarterback

The Nebraska football team will name a starting quarterback before the season starts, but maybe not long before.

Nebraska football head coach Scott Frost touched on a number of subjects during his Big Ten Media Days press conference. Some of the most interesting things he said came directly after the PC.

Speaking to local media once he had left the podium, Frost talked about when he might choose a starting quarterback. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that he has not landed on a starter just yet.

It might come as a bit of a surprise that he has a definite deadline in mind. The Huskers’ head coach made it clear that the latest he will be picking a starting quarterback will be the week before the season opener.

On the one hand, that means Cornhusker fans know when they are going to find out whether they will be seeing Tristan Gebbia or Adrian Martinez lead out the first team against Akron. On the other hand, we’re still a ways away from knowing.

It shouldn’t come as a big surprise that it could take all the way up to the first game to choose. Neither quarterback has any experience on the college football field. Gebbia might have a leg up if the Huskers weren’t adopting an entirely new offense.

That’s perhaps a big boon for Adrian Martinez. Neither quarterback has more experience than the other in running the system Scott Frost is putting in place. Gebbia hasn’t played a down so while he has practiced against college competition, the spring game was the first time he’d played in front of tens of thousands of fans. Adrian Martinez played, and played well in that game too,

For now, the Nebraska football quarterback race is neck and neck. It’s likely going to stay that way for the next month, barring the unforeseeable.
