Nebraska recruiting followers should keep an eye on the players that are in-state not only for themselves but to ward off smaller schools poaching talent.

When it comes to Nebraska recruiting, the Cornhuskers have been able to find calm in the knowledge that the best of the in-state talent isn’t going outside the state.

With yet another former Cornhusker coach joining the FBS ranks, it appears that set of beliefs might be going away for good. Turner Gill and his Liberty Flames are looking for talent they can trust.

It appears Gill believes that the players he trusts are ones that are from his former home. Now at Liberty, the former Huskers quarterback and coach came into Nebraska and offered what could end up being one of the top 2020 targets in the state.

Kearney High athlete Miko Maessner has been getting a bit more attention of late. The prospect, who plays both cornerbacks and running back has three total offers at the moment.

The Cornhuskers have not offered just yet though Maessner does have an offer from a Power 5 school in Iowa State. Liberty became the third team to officially offer the prospect a scholarship.  He also has one from South Dakota State.

With the Flames moving up from the FCS level, players like Maessner are going to get more attention from that level anyway. The fact that a Power 5 school has already come calling likely means there’s going to be more attention coming for the Nebraska native in the next few months.

Mike Maessner did come to one of the Nebraska football’s Friday Night Lights camp this summer. If he has the kind of season he had a year ago, it’s entirely possible those following Nebraska recruiting are going to see Maessner get a Husker offer long before it’s all said and done. For now, a former Nebraska football coach is the latest on the scene.
