New Nebraska football players get their numbers assigned
The Nebraska football season creeps ever closer.
The Nebraska football season is just over a month away now. While that will likely still feel like an eternity to Cornhusker fans, there are signs that we’re getting that much closer to kickoff.
One of those signs popped up on Thursday as many of the brand new Huskers officially got their numbers for the 2018 season. These are obviously not their numbers for the rest of their career, but more likely than not, they are the numbers they will be remembered for throughout Husker lore.
Some of the players got to carry over their numbers from high school or junior college. Others had to get brand new numbers because their favorites were already taken.
The new Huskers’ numbers are:
- Running back Maurice Washington: 28
- Wide receiver Andre Hunt: 15
- Cornerback Will Jackson: 33
- Running back Miles Jones: 26
- Defensive back Cam Jones: 29
- Tight end Cam Jurgens: 44
- Defensive end Casey Rodgers: 98
- Defensive back CJ Smith: 26
- Linebacker Caleb Tannor: 1
- Defensive back Cam Taylor: 10
- Defensive lineman Vaha Vainuku: 11
- Quarterback Noah Vedral: 16
- Defensive lineman Tate Wildeman: 92
- Wide receiver Jaron Woodyard: 88
You can see most of the numbers tend to go right along with the position group to which the player is playing. If there is one that stands out, it’s Andre Hunt’s number 15, though it isn’t out of the norm for receivers to have low double-digit numbers every now and then.
Noah Vedral’s number 16 is also a bit different as quarterback numbers have traditionally been single digits. Of course, Tristan Gebbia sports the number 14, so the Cornhuskers team has already broken that tradition to some point.
The Nebraska football team did add yet another player today in the form of Mitch Balenger so there will have to be another number assigned at some point. For the very short term, the roster is officially official for the 2018 season.
