The famed former Nebraska football assistant left the Flames right before the school went from FCS to FBS.

Turner Gill and most of the rest of the Liberty coaching staff have officially led the Flames to the FBS level. While several former Nebraska football coaches are on the staff, one of the most well known in Ron Brown is not among them.

The Augusta Free Press reported that the former Cornhuskers’ coach left Liberty on June 30, just one day before the Flames officially made the move into the top level of college football.

It’s not clear at the moment whether Brown had always intended to make the move the day before Turner Gill’s team went from what had been known as the 1-AA level to what used to be known as 1-A.

The move is especially interesting because it was just about seven months ago that Ron Brown and the rest of the Liberty staff had gotten a vote of confidence from the school’s athletic department.

The school and Gill have not made it clear why the longtime assistant has decided not to coach at the school anymore. “Ron has been an integral part of our staff, both in his ability to coach young men and in his inherent ability to help our players and staff members continue to grow in their faith,” Gill said when asked about the departure. “He will be missed and we all hope the very best for his family and him.”

In his place, the former Nebraska football assistant coach, as well as former Buffalo Bulls and Kansas Jayhawks’ head coach has named Mike Brown to the staff. Mike Brown played for Liberty during one of the most successful stretches in school history.

Before he joined the former Nebraska football quarterback and quarterbacks’ coach, Mike Brown was an assistant with Delaware. To be clear, this is not the Mike Brown that patrolled the defensive backfield during the Huskers’ heydays.
