The Nebraska recruiting efforts have been quite impressive the last few weeks. Now they are the first Big Ten team to offer Avery Jernigan.

While the focus of Nebraska recruiting efforts in the last few weeks have been getting headlines in the 2018 and 2019 class, Scott Frost and staff aren’t ignoring 2020. The latest evidence of that is the recent offer to 2020 offensive guard Avery Jernigan.

Jernigan hails from Blackshear, Georgia and has been getting more attention from big schools of late. Despite that increased attention, the Cornhuskers are the first team from the Big Ten to make an official scholarship offer.

Just because the Huskers are the first B1G school doesn’t mean he isn’t getting plenty of Power 5 attention. Auburn might be the leader for his services these days but it appears Nebraska has made an impression.

The guard is currently rated as a three-star prospect by Rivals. He’s garnered a score of 5.6 from that recruiting site.

Standing at 6-3 and weighing in at 260 pounds, he certainly has the build of an offensive lineman who could do some damage at the next level. The Huskers just need to make sure that next level is in the midwest rather than SEC country.

Most of Jernigan’s offers have come from that part of the country. Auburn, Florida State and South Carolina were the latest teams to offer before the Cornhuskers came calling earlier this week.

Both the good and the bad news is that it’s going to be a while before Avery can make a binding decision. Should attention on the prospect continue to grow, the fact that the Huskers got their foot in the door relatively early should pay off.

Avery Jernigan’s offer also continues what has been an interesting trend for the Nebraska recruiting efforts since Scott Frost arrived. The staff has been sending out hundreds of offers and seeing who will accept. The approach hasn’t hurt them yet, but it will be interesting to see if that eventually bites them.
