Johnny Rodgers and the best punt return in the history of Nebraska football.

If you somehow haven’t heard about this play, it’s entirely possible you are falling down on the job as a Nebraska football fan.

Johnny Rodgers won a Heisman thanks in large part to runs just like the one that “tore em loose from their shoes.”

It was the “game of the century” in 1971. Rodgers took a punt at the beginning of the game against the Oklahoma Sooners at his own 28-yard line and got all the way into the endzone.

There have been lots of plays talked about on this list talking about players stopping and starting and reversing field. It’s possible that none of those plays were better than what Rodgers did in that game.

This is one of those plays that not only thrills and inspires Husker fans, but also thrills College football fans in general.

That punt return also allowed the Nebraska football team to win a National Title that year. There are few plays in Nebraska football history that are as impressive or as impactful as what Johnny the Jet Rodgers did in that game.
