Ameer Abdullah saves Nebraska football’s bacon

The day was Saturday, September 6, 2014. The opponent was FCS team McNeese State and Nebraska football was on the verge of program history.

The Cornhuskers have had a lot of bad things happen to them since Tom Osborne retired. Those bad things do not include a loss to an FCS program but it was very close until Ameer Abdullah put the entire team on his back.

More from Nebraska Football

With the game against the Cowboys tied and 20 seconds to go, it appears the Huskers and McNeese state were poised to go to overtime.

As all football fans know, anything can happen when you get to overtime. Fans and players alike were likely nervous they were going to be humiliated at home.

Then Ameer Abdullah took a little dump off pass in the flat and ran over, around and through the McNeese State defense for 58 yards.

This play makes it on the list because of the sheer athletic ability it took to make a play that wasn’t supposed to be much into the game-winner. It also makes it on the list because if Ameer hadn’t done that, we could be remembering that game as an incredibly embarrassing loss.

There were bigger games for Nebraska football. There were bigger plays. That’s why this is where it is on the list.

At the same time, this play might have saved the season back in 2014.
