Cory Schlesinger‘s first touchdown run against Miami helped start the Nebraska football run.

The 1995 Orange Bowl againt Miami was moment in time that could have gone many ways for the Nebraska football team. The Cornhuskers were in the National Title game for the second straight year.

The team had fallen the year prior thanks to a missed field goal. People forget how close the Cornhuskers had gotten to three straight Titles. If it weren’t for Cory Schlesinger, we might be talking about how close they got against the Hurricanes as well.

More from Husker Corner

Schlesinger took the ball with the team down 17-10 and rumbled, bumbled, and stumbled into the end zone to tie the game. The best part of that run wasn’t that it tied the game, but showed that the Huskers were taking control.

The Cornhuskers’ vaunted offense was largely bottled up by a great Hurricanes defense led by Warren Sapp. The run by the Huskers’ fullback seemed to pop the top off that bottle.

The next possession, Schlesinger scored yet another touchdown and the Huskers won the game 24-17. They went on to win three National Titles in four years.

It’s safe to say, things might have been different for the Nebraska football team had Schlesinger not managed to break that first touchdown run.
