Much like Vaha Vainuku on Friday, the Nebraska football team isn’t going to have to wait until the 2019 season to see what Will Jackson III can do. Because he graduated from Mesa Community College this May he counts just like any other grad transfer would.

That means that he can enroll now, start summer conditioning and be ready to fight for a job in the fall. That’s a huge boon for a Husker defense that was much maligned last year.

When talking about the coaching staff looking to fix the problems they see right away, it’s clear they mean right away.

Since Scott Frost took over, there have been a couple of departures from the existing roster. Two of those have been on the defensive side of the ball.

While neither of the new arrivals are linebackers, it’s clear that the Cornhusker staff is making sure those roster spots are being filled by bodies that are going to be able to play not next year, but this year.

He’s certainly not guaranteed a starting job, but if there was ever a year when a new arrival could sneak in and steal a spot on the two-deep, it would be 2018. That is especially the case since the one area they didn’t get a ton of help in incoming freshman from is the cornerback position.

Yes, there is some talent there, but it’s a safe bet that the Nebraska football team wouldn’t have gone after him, and Will Jackson wouldn’t have committed if both sides didn’t see a good chance to contribute from day one.
