Nebraska baseball star Scott Schreiber moved past his current head coach on the all-time list of career home runs. Schreiber hit his 43rd career blast.

It hasn’t been anything close to a good season for the Nebraska baseball team as a whole. It has, however been a very good season for Scott Schreiber. On Saturday afternoon the slugger hit his 17th home run of the year and 43rd of his career.

That homer moved him up the career homer list past Steve Stanicek and into fifth place. Schreiber now sits just one home run behind a tie for fourth place all-time with Alex Gordon.

The homer came in the bottom of the first inning, after Maryland hit it’s own blast in the top of the first to give the Terapins a 4-0 lead. Schreiber’s home run cut into that lead by one run as it was a solo knock.

The first baseman’s season has been lost thanks in large part to a pitching staff that has been rocked far too often. If this were a normal season for the Cornhuskers, the argument could be made at least for Big 10 player of the year.

The 2018 has been quite the bounceback for Schreiber. He exploded onto the college baseball radar in 2016 when he hit .325 and 16 homer runs, with 55 RBI.

Last year his batting average actually went up a few points but his homer power disappeared and he hit just seven jacks. This season that home run power is back and he’s still progressing as a hitter.

He came into today’s game hitting .385 and had already tied his career high in four-baggers in a season. He’s now got a new career high and a chance, should he keep knocking them out of the park to move into second all-time before his playing time is over.

Bobby Benjamin who played for the Nebraska baseball team from 1988-1990 currently sits in second place all-time with 48 home runs.

Matt Hopper, who played for the Huskers from 2000-2003 is uncatchable for Scott Schreiber as he has 64 blasts in his career.
