Nebraska football suffers injury scare in Tuesday morning practice
Nebraska football fans all over the country were holding their collective breaths on Tuesday morning when an ambulance had to be called to practice.
Nebraska football head coach Scott Frost announced redshirt freshman Bradley Bunner was taken to the hospital via ambulance on Tuesday morning during practice. Bunner was apparently taken “as a precaution” after what was termed a “collision.”
On Tuesday afternoon, Frost was happy to report that Bunner had since been released from the hospital and checked out fine.
While this incident turned out to be a kind of “false alarm” the day was a reminder that while everyone is having fun getting geared up for this Saturday’s spring game, injuries are a part of the sport.
The Cornhuskers found that out shortly after winter workouts started under the new coaching staff. Two players had to be taken to the hospital following one of the first workouts because they were suffering from rhabdomyolysis.
As the Omaha World-Herald laid out, Rhabdo is caused by “death of muscle fibers that leak into the bloodstream and can cause kidney problems, including kidney failure.” It turns out both Huskers have made a full recovery since.

It doesn’t appear Bunner’s injury was that serious but it could have been a lot worse. Anytime I hear about a player being taken by ambulance after a collision, I think “spinal cord injury.”
Since he’s already been released, if that was the worry, it appears to have been resolved. Frost hasn’t yet, and likely won’t (or can’t) go into specifics about just what happened and how serious the worry was.
Bunner is a redshirt-freshman walk-on defensive back from Clarkson, Nebraska. Last year, he made Mike Riley’s squad after an open tryout at the beginning of the fall.

It appears Bunner is back for another season, looking to get some playing time for the Nebraska football team sooner rather than later. We can all breath a sigh of relief that he apparently escaped serious injury.
