The Nebraska football team is just 11 days away from the spring game and end of spring practice and there’s starting to be separation at quarterback.
The Nebraska football team is going to have a new starter at quarterback this year. A new starter is a given.
What isn’t a given is just who that new starter will be. While every fan has their favorite or a guess on who they think is going to win the job, Scott Frost and company have been tight-lipped about who might be the front-runner.
There are four quarterbacks who can start under center next year. Andrew Bunch, Adrian Martinez, Tristan Gebbia and Patrick O’Brien.
Bunch is a walkon and the longest of long shots, barring several injuries to get the job. That leaves Martinez, Gebbia, and O’Brien squaring off for the starting nod in September.
While Frost and company aren’t saying who is the leader in the clubhouse, it appears there is in fact, a leader. After the team’s practice on Tuesday, Frost addressed the media extensively about the quarterback situation.
Frost actually gave more information than people were probably expecting and there are a couple of different takeaways, but the most interesting is that there is in fact clear separation between the quarterbacks.

That separation is watered down a bit by the fact that Frost also made it clear, there is some struggling going on right now when it comes to getting a feel for the offense.
The Cornhuskers head coach made it clear those struggles are to be expected, especially since they are learning a new offense. He also had good things to say about every quarterback trying for the job.
Frost wouldn’t say which quarterback or quarterbacks was getting separation but he did say he liked the way that Patrick O’Brien is throwing the ball. He also said he was impressed with the speed of Gebbia.
The head coach was perhaps most effusive when he was talking about how impressed he was with Bunch. He also had an injury update of sorts when it came to Adrian Martinez.
The Huskers coach said that Martinez was still working back from injury, that the dual-threat passer as getting his arm strength back, but it was about 90 percent where it should be.
As for whether or not Nebraska football fans should expect to know who the starting quarterback is by the Spring Game? Scott Frost made it fairly clear the competition is likely going to last into the fall.
