The Nebraska football team is looking to get a punter in the 2019 class and the nation’s second-best would certainly be a nice get.

The Nebraska football team might be spending quite a bit of time on some of the top skill position players in the country, but it appears the coaching staff doesn’t have tunnel vision when it comes to the other spots on the roster.

Over the weekend, the squad offered a dual-threat special teams player that is among the best in the country. Austin McNamara was in Lincoln for the team’s Junior Day and it appears he liked what he saw.

It also appears the Cornhuskers’ coaching staff liked what they saw. McNamara left the event with a brand new scholarship offer giving him a total of three on the year.

While the Huskers are set for kicker for the next few years with the signing of Barrett Pickering last year, they will be looking for a punter in the next couple of seasons. Caleb Lightbourn is going to be a junior this season.

McNamara would likely not be competing for the starting spot this season, as Lightbourn made some big strides from his freshman year. It’s always nice to have a backup plan on the roster.

In addition to the Cornhuskers’ offer, he’s also been offered scholarships from Arizona and Arizona State. That means that once again, Nebraska was the first Big Ten team to show tangible interest in McNamara.

According to some of the experts in the field, he rates out as the second-best punter in the entire class. That means that the Cornhuskers are still looking at the best of the best, even when it comes to a position that doesn’t always get a ton of attention.

Hailing out of Gilbert, Arizona, it will likely be a tall order for the Nebraska football team to steal Austin McNamara from Arizona and Arizona State. The good news is he seemed to enjoy Lincoln.
