Nebraska football’s quarterback coach Mario Verduzco is coming into the QB1 situation without any preconceived notions.
When it comes to the quarterback position for the Nebraska football team, there are certain ideas fans have. In their minds, they’ve already decided who is the favorite and who is likely the backup.
Quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco is taking a different approach. After being recently asked if he had watched film on the current quarterbacks that are slated to compete for the starting job, Verduzco said he hadn’t.
Apparently doesn’t mean that he hadn’t studied film. It means he hadn’t looked at film at all.
#Huskers QB coach @Coach_Verdu on POB & TGeb: "With regards to their performance and their play here at Nebraska, I haven't watched (any film) at all."

That approach is bound to give some people a little pause. They’re likely thinking the coach is taking a rather Spartan approach to his job.

The fact of the matter is it might be the best way to go about things. Instead of watching how the quarterbacks ran another offense, he’s learning in real time.
This approach could allow Verduzco to also have a more honest reaction if he happens to spot a bad habit in one of their forms. It won’t be something he saw in film and then notices in real time.
If there is something there, it’s because he’s seen it in person, on the practice field. We’ll have to wait and see how that shapes the quarterback race this spring and fall.
That is one of the preconceptions some fans have about the Cornhuskers. Whether it’s Adrian Martinez (who Verduzco played a major role in recruiting) or Tristan Gebbia or Patrick O’Brien, it appears as though the race is going to be wide open.
This will also allow the Husker quarterbacks to start fresh. They won’t be coming in with Verduzco automatically thinking they are doing something wrong.
While some people might be worried about a brand new coach coming in and not really looking about how the current players on the Nebraska football team, Mario Verduzco is someone who has been around long enough to know what approach works. One only needs to pay attention to what the UCF quarterback did a year ago to know that.
