The Nebraska football team got its first commitment of 2018 from in-state offensive lineman Ethan Piper.

Nebraska football’s long intrastate nightmare is over. The program finally has a commit in 2018.

Ok, that’s a bit tongue in cheek. National signing day was just last month and by all accounts recruiting is going quite well for the Cornhuskers.

There are plenty of top prospects on the national stage that have shown some real interest in Nebraska. Still, it’s nice to get some of these kids officially saying they plan to play in Lincoln.

Ethan Piper is the third commit from the 2019 class but he’s the first official commitment in the new calendar year. Piper is a three-star prospect out of Norfolk Catholic who certainly has the measurables that was getting him notice outside the state.

More from Nebraska Football

Piper had received an offer just a few days ago and it was thought he might be pulling the trigger before too long. On Monday morning, he did indeed pull that trigger, announcing through his official Twitter account that he was going to be a Husker.

The message was a good one, talking about the familial feeling he’s had with Cornhusker fans since he was a wee lad. It shows that while Scott Frost is having to rebuild the program, it’s still plenty beloved here at home.

Piper had just started getting notice from other FBS schools. He also had an offer from Iowa and Ohio.

Considering he stands at 6-4 and 280 pounds it doesn’t seem likely those will be the last schools he hears from. The good news is that his tweet makes it plenty clear there is very little chance he might be lured away from the Nebraska football program before National Signing Day. He joins fellow Nebraskans Garrett Nelson (Scottsbluff) and Garrett Snodgrass (York) on the Cornhuskers’ 2019 commitment list.
