Nebraska football: Huskers walk-on class grows to 20 with surprising additions

The Nebraska football now has 20 walk-ons in the 2018 class with two new additions that were rather surprising based on their recruiting profiles.

Just a day after the Nebraska football walk-on class for 2018 hit 18 players, it now sits at 20. Two more walk-ons have joined the fray since Simon Otte and Benett Folkers announced their intention to be Huskers.

The two newest additions might be the biggest surprises of the bunch, if you’re looking at recruiting profiles alone. Now long after Folkers and Otte announced, running back Moses Bryant said he would be walking on for the Cornhuskers.

Bryant is forgoing getting a scholarship right away, despite the fact that Rivals has him rated as a three-star back. On Tuesday afternoon, Bryant was joined by versatile athlete Lane McCallum.

That particular walk-on announcement was surprising because the player had been enrolled at Air Force, having originally been part of the 2017 class. Both walk-ons make more sense when you take a deeper dive.

For Bryant, despite the fact that he was a three-star running back out of Elkhorn, he didn’t have any FBS offers. Obvious talent apparently wasn’t overriding his location in the state.

For McCallum, the former Cadet is from Norfolk. It seems possible that the opportunity to come back home and play for Scott Frost was too enticing to pass up.

Both additions mean that a walk-on class that was already considered full of potential is going to get better. The optimism over the walk-on class underlines the optimism that surrounds the group of scholarship players the Huskers have managed to sign, or expect to sign.

Even without several potential signing day additions, the Nebraska football team is currently ranked 23rd in Rivals’ team rankings. Should they get a nice percentage of the players they are waiting on, the ranking could go quite a bit higher.
