While all eyes have been focused on the Nebraska football team’s scholarship players, the program has been putting together a great walkon class.

The Nebraska football team has been steadily climbing up the rankings for weeks. When talking about those players that are getting scholarships that’s a good thing.

Any Husker fan knows those scholarship players aren’t the end all and be all. Scott Frost and the rest of the staff announced when they arrived that the walk-on program was going to get a level of attention it hadn’t for years.

On Sunday, the Cornhuskers added two more talented walk-ons. Those additions bring the total number to 18 for the 2018 class.

When looking at trying to rebuild from a 4-8 season and a steady decline in overall talent, it doesn’t hurt to add as many bodies as possible. Some of these kids were lower rated because of where they played.

One only needs to look at Omaha players in the 2019 and 2020 class to understand that the talent level in Nebraska is increasing. Of the 18 kids that are now committed to walking on for the Cornhuskers, it’s possible Frost and company will find a few that can be big contributors.

The latest talented players to join the class is York athlete Simon Otte and Gothenburg wide receiver Bennett Folkers. Despite playing for a Class B school, Otte was a first-team all-Super State.

Folkers was an honorable mention All-State selection in Class C-1. Between the two of them, Otte appears to be the one who could make an immediate difference.

It should be pointed out the defender played alongside scholarship player Masry Mapieu. During the season, Otte racked up 101 tackles. He was an impact player on offense as well, rushing for 1,435 yards and 14 touchdowns.

At this point, its impossible to know which walk-on players could turn into impact players on the FBS level. For now, the Nebraska football team will just have to take solace in the fact that they are rounding up most of the best kids in the state.
