Nebraska football: Kevin Sumlin hire closes the door on Khalil Tate prospects

Some Nebraska football fans likely had their eyes on Khalil Tate after a recent outburst.

It makes sense for Nebraska football fans to look at every quarterback situation in college football right now and wonder “what if?” The Huskers have been swooping up transfers and JUCO players at a record pace.

When you see a player the caliber of Khalil Tate say he “didn’t come to Arizona to run the Triple Option” you have to wonder. That outburst, on Twitter and since deleted appears to have been about rumors Arizona was going to hire Ken Niumatalolo.

Tate was clearly unhappy about those rumors and for a brief period of time, it seemed as though he might be a transfer target for the Huskers. The fact of the matter is that it appears Arizona was convinced he was gone if they did hire the Navy coach.

One report indicates his tweet “spooked‘ the school and they decided to hire someone else. That someone else turned out to be Kevin Sumlin.

That’s bad news for Nebraska, considering Sumlin is likely a better hire for the Pac 12 team. Despite being fired from Texas A&M, Sumlin has had a good career running some of the best offenses in the NCAAs.

With a weapon like Tate on board, the Arizona offense could be even better than 2017. That weapon would have been a big one had it ended up in the hands of the Huskers.

Some people will likely scoff at the idea the Huskers could have lured him here. Those people likely forget just how quickly things moved when the Cornhuskers were going after Adrian Martinez.

Martinez was one of the most highly sought after dual-threat quarterbacks in the 2018 class. It stands to reason that the Nebraska football team might have been able to lure Khalil Tate. With Kevin Sumlin on board, those prospects seem dead.
