Former Nebraska football running backs have big Sundays
Former Nebraska football stars Ameer Abdullah and Rex Burkhead both had great Sundays for their respective teams, helping them to wins.
While the current crop of Nebraska football running backs are having problems getting going this season, a couple of former Huskers are having themselves pretty good seasons. Rex Burkhead and Ameer Abdullah have both played central roles in helping their teams compete for the playoffs this year and both players had successful Sundays yesterday en route to big victories.
For the Detroit Lions, Abdullah didn’t run wild, but he was certainly effective against the Cleveland Browns. Carrying just 11 times, Ameer went for 52 yards on the ground. That included one 20-yard scamper and an eight-yard touchdown run.
Abdullah ended up leading his team in rushing and while he is still searching for his first 100-yard game of the season he now has 469 yards on the season. At the moment, the former Husker is projected to run for 834 yards and five touchdowns this year for a Detroit Lions team with their heart set on a return to the playoffs.
Rex Burkhead isn’t the featured back for the New England Patriots, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t seeing plenty of action this year. Sunday was arguably his best all-around day as a pro. Not only did he carry 10 times for 36 yards and catch three passes for 27 yards and a touchdown but he also blocked a punt.
His performance was a big one en route to the Patriots 41-16 victory over the Denver Broncos. Burkhead has definitely been a jack of all trades for his team. The former Husker has 25 carries for exactly 100 yards. He also has 15 receptions for 155 yards and two touchdowns. This was his first touchdown since he had a TD catch the first week of the season. The former Nebraska football star is also obviously putting in time on special teams.
