Sampson started his head coaching career at Montana Tech, guiding the Orediggers to three Frontier Conference Championships.
After being named Coach of the Year in 1983 and 1985, he moved on to Washington State as an assistant.
In 1988, Sampson took over as head coach of the Cougars, where he led Wazzu to its first postseason bid in nine years and first NCAA Tournament berth in 11 years.
After two 20-win seasons in three years, Sampson was offered the head coaching job at Oklahoma.
In his first season with the Sooners, Sampson was named National Coach of the Year (β95).
Throughout his 12 years at Oklahoma, he led the team to 11 NCAA tournaments, one Sweet Sixteen, one Elite Eight and one Final Four.
In 2006, Sampson took over as the head coach at Indiana before being forced to resign after allegations of serious NCAA violations in 2008.
After a stint as an assistant coach in the NBA, Sampson accepted the position of head coach at Houston.
During his first three years, he has revitalized the Cougar program, achieving two 20-win seasons the last two years.
