This is getting silly. Ever since Nebraska basketball head coach Tim Miles has been retained, players have been announcing their intentions to transfer left and right.

Sophomore forward Michael Jacobson makes the fourth member of last year’s team that’s ready to seek greener pastures leaving us to wonder if keeping Miles is really worth the trouble.

Should athletic director Shawn Eichorst have a short list of coaches he’ll be calling?

Yes.

We took the liberty of getting a preliminary list going for him.

In no particular order, here are some hot names on the market, as well as some Nebraska-specific options for home run hires.

C’mon, Shawn.

Mark Gottfried

  • UCLA Assistant Coach (’87-95)
  • Murray State Head Head Coach (’95-’98)
  • Alabama Head Coach (’99-’09)
  • North Carolina State Head Coach (’10-’17)

Gottfried’s head coaching career began at Murray State in 1995 where he led the Racers to a yearly average win total of 20 or better.

In his three seasons at the helm, Murray State placed first in the Ohio Valley Conference three times and appeared in the NCAA Tournament twice.

His Power Five coaching career began at Alabama. He led the Crimson Tide to their first No. 1 ranking and first Elite Eight in school history along with five straight NCAA appearances in 11 seasons.

After two disappointing seasons and a subpar beginning to the 2008 season, he resigned from his position.

At NC State, he led the Wolfpack to four straight NCAA appearances including two Sweet Sixteens.

After two straight 17-loss seasons, NC State chose to part ways with Gottfried.

NCAA Head Coaching Record: 401-241 (.625)

11 NCAA Tournament Appearances in 20 years

Two Sweet Sixteens

One Elite Eight

The “big name” necessity isn’t totally covered, but Gottfried is familiar with high expectations.

Another Power Five school for Gottfried to build from the ground up? Seems like his forte.
