Nebraska Football: Joshua Kalu’s Move to Safety Speaks Volumes
Nebraska football head coach Mike Riley gave Joshua Kalu a “look-see” at safety before the Huskers went on spring break. It appears that Kalu flourished.
Look no further than his permanent move to boundary safety.
With Nebraska’s No. 2 cornerback making a move, this lines sophomore Lamar Jackson — a 6-3, 210-pound former four-star recruit — across from Chris Jones.
Not only does this speak to Jackson’s testament and that the Husker defensive staff is looking to get the best four members of the secondary on the field, but that the depth in the secondary has the coaches’ trust.
Sophomores Eric Lee Jr and Avery Anderson back Jones and Jackson up along with redshirt freshman Dicaprio Bootle. Elijah Blades, a four-star cornerback recruit from the 2017 class, joins them all for summer camp.
That’s a lot of youth at a critical area of defense, but defensive coordinator Bob Diaco’s not about to let talent sit on the sidelines, young or old.
Once reliable backups are established, Kalu can always be used as another cornerback should anything unfortunate happen.
Then again, if the likes of Lee, Anderson, Bootle or Blades step up, that scenario may be far down the list of contingencies.

This is truly an exciting development as Jackson was looked at as elite talent coming out of high school.
With the praise he’s getting from Nebraska’s defensive coaches, his new starting role could be just the tip of the iceberg.
For now, Big Ten quarterbacks are going to have to deal with a very hyped up, tall cornerback that’s looking to make his coaches proud let alone a secondary that combines speed and size.
