1. Jan 2, 1996 – Nebraska 62 Florida 24

Yes, Nebraska had run roughshod over every opponent in its wake. Three Top-10 teams couldn’t knock the Huskers off. However, the speedy Florida Gators were supposed to give this Nebraska football team what for and end the Big Red’s dominating season with a loss.

Nuh-uh.

If there was any doubt about just how good the 1995 Huskers were, they ground it (along with the Gators) into the Tempe, Ariz. turf.

Nebraska rushed 68 times for 524 yards that evening. Florida’s 21 rushing attempts resulted in a loss of 28 yards. Quarterback Tommie Frazier totaled 199 yards on the ground while the wrecking ball known as Lawrence Phillips added 165 of his own.

The Huskers racked up 629 yards overall as the night wore on and Florida grew weary. Defensive back Michael Booker would even get into the act, scoring on a 42-yard interception thrown by Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel.

Wuerffel would finish the evening going 17-for-31, throwing for 255 yards and tossed three of those passes to the opposition.

This game is still used as a metric for national championship game dominance to this day even with Nick Saban’s Alabama teams creating a dynasty of their own.

Perhaps the best part about this game was that Husker fans didn’t know there was yet another national championship to come just two short years down the road.
