Nebraska Football: Biggest Crushes in Husker History
3. Nov 15, 1986 – Nebraska 70 Kansas 0
When one team hands another its worst loss ever — ever — that qualifies as one of the best days the victor’s ever had. Sure, the Jayhawks have taken some beatings but when Nebraska knocked them off at home by ten touchdowns in 1986, that was a pretty notable accomplishment. What makes this even more impressive is that Nebraska’s No. 1 quarterback (Steve Taylor) sat out due to bruised ribs.
The Big Red ran 71 times for 490 yards (a 6.9 yard per carry average) and passed for 97 yards to… keep the opposition honest? On the flip side, Kansas tried to run the ball (emphasis on the word “tried”.) The Jayhawks would attempt 22 rushes for a loss of 21 yards.
Their passing efforts didn’t go much better either as Kelly Donohoe went 14-for-28, tossing 121 yards and threw a pass to the Blackshirts.
Nebraska’s Clete Blakeman, on the other hand, mostly stuck to the ground gaining 61 yards and scored on a 29-yard run in the third quarter. Big Red running back Keith Jones lit up the scoreboard with the game’s first pair of touchdowns and tallied 115 yards rushing on 15 attempts.
Husker head coach Tom Osborne didn’t quite see the game going down the way it did.
"“It’s hard to say much after a game like that,” he said. “I was surprised at the score. I thought we’d win, but maybe (by) 14 or 17 points.”"
