The Nebraska football team, and Nebraska in general was the subject of some pretty hilarious rumors over the last few weeks, claiming the school was headed back to the Big 12.

While those rumors seemed rather odd when they first started out, there was at least one radio host who was desperately trying to up his profile who swore up and down he had sources the Huskers were headed back to their old home. After the announcement by the Big 12 that not only wouldn’t Nebraska be coming, but no teams would be coming, the Big 10 and Cornhusker fans can breathe a sigh of relief.

When you read reports about the mess the Big 12’s hunt for a couple of additional teams really were, Nebraska football fans should indeed be taking a big sigh of relief. It doesn’t appear the Big 12 choosing to stand pat was because the conference took a long look at the economic viability of such a move and decided it was in its best interest to stay at 10 teams.

The reason the conference is staying at the number of teams it currently has, is because there was too much infighting about what teams to invite to join. Husker fans have seen this kind of infighting and greed before. It is, after all why Nebraska decided to get out and head to the Big Ten while the getting was good.

The same can be said for Missouri, Colorado and Texas A&M. All four schools’ ADs are likely leaning way back in their office chairs and letting out a chuckle. The inability to reach a consensus was apparently such a divisive issue the league has not only tabled discussion this year, but it has said it will not be expanding at any point in the near future.

You have to wonder what kind of spin job Tim Montemayor is trying to put on the rumors he threw out there a couple of weeks ago. I have to assume he’s still trying to claim pretty hard that he was right all along and things just fell through. Whatever Montemayor is saying, let’s be clear. It’s absolutely a good thing that the Nebraska football team and the rest of the program is staying in the Big Ten where it belongs.
