The Nebraska football team is going to be finding themselves in a bit of a conundrum in 2017.

While Mike Riley and company are going to have more talent at the quarterback position than the team has had in years, that talent doesn’t run very deep. When Tommy Armstrong and Ryker Fyfe both graduate after this season, the QBs on the roster will be Patrick O’Brien, Tanner Lee, Tristan Gebbia (as a true freshman) and perhaps Zack Darlington.

One way to make sure the program is able to add a bit of depth and perhaps another player who can compete for the starting job is to bring in Blake Barnett. According to ESPN, Alabama announced Barnett is leaving the school and is suspected to be headed to a JUCO.

That means that he can start playing at the lower level right away. It also means that should he manage to complete all his coursework, the redshirt freshman would be eligible to play anywhere next season.

Mike Riley and company have already brought in one transfer quarterback in Lee. If they could get the likes of Barnett to even look this way, it could turn into quite the coup. Tanner Lee has plenty of experience at Tulane, but it’s not that often that you can get a quarterback who has experience starting for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Barnett was actually the starter for the team when they opened the season against USC. After completing 5 of 6 passes for 100 yards and a touchdown, Barnett was lifted for Jalen Hurts and Hurts has been the man ever since.

Certainly there are going to be some hurdles if the Nebraska football team goes after Barnett. It certainly appears as if the quarterback wants a team with very little competition. The Huskers lost a quarterback of their own because AJ Bush felt there was a bit of a logjam at the position.

AJ Bush is also not someone who was going to be capable of starting this season at Alabama. With the depth issues the Huskers are facing and the obvious talent Barnett has, the Nebraska football team needs to keep this player in its sites and needs to recruit him when the time is right.
