Husker fans everywhere rejoiced yesterday watching the victory over Wyoming on Saturday, along with Tommy Armstrong Jr.’s impressive performance.
Armstrong had a record-setting moment yesterday with the second passing touchdown he had during the match up against Wyoming. This pass allowed him to break the previous school record of 56 career touchdown passes held by Taylor Martinez.
The 9-yard pass to Jordan Westerkamp in the fourth quarter allowed Tommy to be added to the history of the Nebraska Football program. Armstrong also threw for two other touchdown passes during the game, a 63-yard pass to Alonzo Moore in the second quarter and a 34-yard touchdown to Westerkamp in the third quarter.
As a student attending the game, I can attest to just how amazing some of these plays were. I, along with other fans would become very nervous as Armstrong would throw the long passes, afraid of an interception, but as soon as the ball made it into Westerkamp or Moore’s arms, the entire stadium exploded with cheers.

Martinez, the past record holder, played at Nebraska from 2009-2013 (with 2009 being his Redshirt season). He and Armstrong were on the team together in 2012 and 2013 (with 2012 being Armstrong’s Redshirt season). Armstrong served as the No. 2 quarterback behind Martinez at the beginning of the 2013 season, but eventually took over the starting role midway through the season.
Armstrong is going to be able to build upon the record before he is done with his time here at Lincoln with nearly a full season left ahead of him. We have seen him working very hard to improve his passing game throughout his time with Nebraska Football, as this has been one of his weaknesses, so it is nice to see him be able to make history in the program in this way. He faced pressure stepping in after Martinez his Redshirt Freshman year, but has proven everyone wrong by surpassing more of Martinez’s career numbers.
Now, we will have to wait to see what the Huskers bring to the table as Nebraska Football is matched up against the Oregon Ducks next week at Memorial.
While some fans have doubted the team, especially Armstrong’s ability to succeed, I have nothing but high hopes going into this highly anticipated match-up next week. The team has definitely begun to start proving themselves as a successful team. I cannot wait to see what more improvements and records they are going to be able to make throughout the rest of the season.
