Many Nebraska Football fans are wondering about Ryker Fyfe and whether he is ready to play this year.

The Huskers have seen many quarterbacks come on to the team, and not stand out, causing them to decide to leave. Many fans believed that this would be the case, especially after some of Fyfe’s not-so-strong performances in the past. He has even spoke saying how he has thought about leaving, but he understands the role as backup quarterback is an important one.

As he enters his fifth season with Nebraska Football, he says that he is ready to go whenever he is needed. Fyfe has said how as a second-string player, you must always be ready because you’re only a play away. And with it being his last year on the team, he has no plans of leaving early.

He’ll be back this season as quarterback Tommy Armstrong’s back-up QB. We may not see him start a game like we did last year (unless Armstrong is taken out again), but that hasn’t stopped him from improving himself. Fyfe has gone back and tried to learn from past mistakes, such as some of the plays from the game against Purdue last season.

Fyfe’s attitude is one to be admired. While some of the past second-string quarterbacks have given up and chosen to leave the program when unable to reach success, Fyfe has never quit. He treats his preparation and practice time as though he were a starter for the team. This positive mental attitude is something, I believe, all players should have.

A strong work ethic is what every athlete needs, even those who do not achieve success easily. Understanding that every member of the team is equally important is an attribute all people should strive to have. Whether you are first or last-string, it is vital to take on each practice as though you were starting. Pushing yourself to your limits is the only way to improve, and this mindset is one that I believe Fyfe embodies.

Many coaches see this mentality in Fyfe as well, and have also pointed out his progress. Danny Langsdorg, the offensive coordinator for Nebraska Football, has praised Fyfe for his preparation for the upcoming season. Langsdorf stated how he believes that Fyfe is in the best shape he’s ever been in and that he has gotten more comfortable behind the ball.

Fyfe’s already strong work ethic only improved with the passing of close friend, Sam Foltz. The two played with and against each other for years, having both grown up in Grand Island. Practicing without the kid who he had his entire life took a toll on him, but Foltz’s attitude and work ethic has inspired Fyfe to emulate that mentality in his own life.

If Fyfe is called upon to step up and play this season, he will be ready. His mindset and attitude are something to be held in high regard, and his determination to never give up is something everyone should strive to have.
